Welcome to the Stone Age.Is a picture still worth a thousand words if the picture is round yellow and LOLing?
The world we live in is pretty incredible.
It’s full of amazing, bleeping, colourful, sharing, wonders and we’re able to pick up, poke, stroke and interact with them in new ways every day.
This is very strange. I’m having this super amazing experience of seeing a photo/video/poem/song about a place on the other side of our city/country/planet with a beautiful person/car/mountain I may never see and it’s filling this moment with real joy and all I can do is say “LIKE”.
It’s the emotional equivalent of “HULK SMASH”. It’s exactly that simple. It’s space age technology with caveman self-expression:
“ME MAKE VIDEO, BRING HOPE AND INSPIRATION TO MILLIONS ALL AROUND WORLD.”
Or you know, if you’re really sophisticated, you can send a little picture of how you feel:
“Without you I am only half a person, half happy, with half a life. With you I am everything and complete.”
“RED HEART SHAPE”
“I was hoping for a little more than that”
“SEVERAL RED HEART SHAPES IN A ROW”
It is better to be able to express yourself poorly than not at all. But here’s the thing: while not all of us can express ourselves like Shakespeare, we all have emotional worlds inside of us just like Shakespeare. And isn’t the whole point of technology to help us in areas where we’re not naturally gifted? Self expression should be no different.
Perhaps what we really need to give the caveman is not a new, neural net artificially intelligent stick.
Maybe what we need is something which is not about hitting and building, it’s tools which give us eloquence, insight and human connection.
What happens when they ask you to do the one thing you always said you wouldn’t? How far will you really go for your ideals?
The future belongs to the interesting people.
The L word, business and people who just don’t think emotions are appropriate.
Brands grow old but they need to do it gracefully and with style.
